Mega shopping center near The Hague opens doors in the middle of lockdown | NOW

The largest shopping center in the country opened on Thursday, despite the hard lockdown. It has been given the name Westfield Mall of the Netherlands, is located in Leidschendam and has an area of 117,000 square meters. The shops can only open to a limited extent and, for example, the cinema and catering, which are also part of the shopping center, must remain closed.

Yet real estate company and initiator Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has decided not to wait any longer, because the retailers need income. Unfortunately for them, it will not be a storm in the coming period.

Shopping is currently only allowed if customers make an appointment in advance. In addition, there may be a maximum of one customer per 25 square meters in the store. In addition, there is the option to order online and to collect it in the store, the so-called click & collect.

The new shopping mall has been worked on for years. Westfield Mall of the Netherlands is the successor to the Leidsenhage shopping center, the building of which has been renovated, including a striking, undulating facade.

Although part of the center opened several years ago, Westfield has its doors all the way Thursday opened. It did not become a festive opening; it must follow later.
