Mega project completed: New connecting station in New York opened

NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – After years of delays and cost explosions, a new connection terminal has opened at New York’s Grand Central station. Trains on the Long Island Rail Road from the Queens district and from Long Island, which is offshore from the metropolis, have been arriving at “Grand Central Madison” since Wednesday – the first arrived at 11:07 a.m. local time, with Governor Kathy Hochul on board, among others.

Located beneath the world-famous Grand Central train station, the connecting terminal is adorned with mural mosaics by artists such as Yayoi Kusama and Kiki Smith. The New York City Transportation Authority expects around 160,000 people a day at the station. The construction work began in 2001 and was repeatedly delayed for a variety of reasons, and the costs ultimately exploded to around eleven billion dollars./cah/DP/zb
