Mega music picnic with the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt on Saturday on the Mainwiesen

Hanau. “Nice, but wet” is how the conclusion of the summer night premiere at the new location last year could be summed up. Although the change of location from the Wilhelmsbad State Park to the Main meadows below Philippsruhe Castle did not detract from the charm of the event, a rain poncho and rubber boots were absolutely indispensable accessories for everyone who wanted to listen to the sounds of the New Philharmonic that evening. According to the current weather forecast, however, the chances are quite good that the umbrella can be left at home for Hanau’s largest picnic on Saturday.

Lucas Schobert, head of the city’s events office, currently checks his weather app “every hour, it feels like”. So far, he is quite optimistic about the major event, which he is organizing on his own for the first time, after his predecessor Bernd Michel retired last year with the summer night as his last official act. But not least because Schobert has also been familiar with the event for a long time and can also count on a well-rehearsed team, the new chief organizer is currently looking forward to the preparations with satisfaction. The construction, which began on Tuesday, Schobert told our newspaper on Wednesday, has so far gone much more smoothly than last year, when the Main meadows were already pretty muddy before the event due to persistent rain. Apart from a few minor logistical changes such as the relocation of toilet containers and bike guards, Schobert and his team are basing their work on the “very positive experiences” of last year. The popular event was held for the first time on the Main meadows because the large number of visitors who had previously flocked to the Wilhelmsbad spa park once a year was not beneficial to the old and now severely weakened tree population.

New Philharmonie celebrates a quarter century

This year, thousands are expected to spread out their picnic blankets on the Mainwiesen and enjoy the concert of the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt with the whole family, friends or club. In the year of its 25th anniversary, the cross-over orchestra, which is now based in Hanau, promises a summer night that will be remembered for a long time under the motto “Totally detached – 25 years of the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt” and wants to relive legendary moments in its history on the Mainwiesen stage. Film music, classical classics and rock ballads will be heard – but Lucas Schobert does not want to be more specific. He only announces that there will be one or two surprises and: “The Philharmonie musicians are not coming alone, they have guests with them,” he reveals meaningfully.

“Cups for a good cause” campaign in aid of the youth center

For the first time this year, guests at the Hanau Summer Night can also support a good cause when buying drinks. The “Cups for a good cause” campaign, which many already know from the summer concerts in the amphitheater, is being held to benefit youth work in Kesselstadt: deposit cups can be handed in at six specially marked stations and the deposit donated to the Juz K-Town. This supports the youth center’s diverse offerings, such as the boxing program, student support, or the annual swimming course. Young people and employees of the Juz will also be on site and provide information about the campaign.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m., admission is free, but those who want a seat directly in front of the stage pay a fee of 15, 17 or 19 euros, depending on the category (www.frankfurt-Ticket.de/Ticket-Hotline 069/1340400). The catering facilities on the event site are open from 3 p.m. There are a few parking spaces available in the car park at the Mainwiesen and in Karlsbader Strasse, which is closed on one side during the event. Visitors are nevertheless urgently requested to travel by bike or public transport wherever possible.

Significant traffic disruptions expected

Because of the Hanau Summer Night, road users in Kesselstadt must prepare for a change in traffic routing and significant traffic delays. Appropriate diversion signs will be put up. The city police will monitor the surrounding area as part of their patrols.

The major event makes it necessary to close various streets and squares or to adjust the traffic flow accordingly, among other things to create additional parking spaces. In addition, temporary no-parking zones will be signposted in the immediate vicinity of the event around Philippsruhe Castle. These are necessary to provide access to the event site in the event of an emergency by the police, fire brigade and rescue services. Illegally parked vehicles will be towed away if necessary.

The country road will be completely closed from the Burgallee junction to the Kirchhoffstrasse junction at times. Taxis will be allowed access to the amphitheater. As in previous years, the taxi rank will be set up in the area of Philippsruher Allee (at house number 43). On this day, Karlsbader Strasse, Kantstrasse and Königsberger Strasse will be set up as one-way streets in the section between Burgallee/Karlsbader Strasse and the Burgallee/Königsberger Strasse junction, with traffic heading towards Königsberger Strasse. In this area, diagonal parking is permitted on the south and west sides of the street and is signposted accordingly. Please note that the area of Fire Station II, on Karlsbader Strasse, is exempt from this parking regulation. There, no stopping will remain in place to ensure that the station is operational in the event of an emergency. Pfarrer-Hufnagel-Strasse will also be set up as a one-way street, with traffic heading towards Salisweg.

Free special buses to the event site

In order to avoid possible traffic disruptions, visitors should use alternative means of transport. In the city of Hanau, the Hanau Tram (HSB) buses and special buses can be used free of charge from 4 p.m. until the end of operations to get to the “Friedenskirche” bus stop and walk from there to the event site. For the outward journey to the summer night, an additional bus will be used on line 4 at 5.10 p.m. and line 6 at 5 p.m. from Klein-Auheim and Steinheim as well as Großauheim and Wolfgang. These go directly to the event site. For the return journey after the end of the concert, a total of four additional buses will run, namely to Großauheim via Wolfgang (line 6), Klein-Auheim via Steinheim (line 4), Lamboy via Freiheitsplatz (line 10) and to the main station (line 5). Departure from the “Friedenskirche” stop will be at around 11 p.m.
