The blood collection campaign took place in different localities of the cybercity in Ebène: the Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Tower, the Cyber Tower 2, the commercial center of Ebène and the NeXTeracom tower. In all, 305 pints of blood were collected.
The Minister of Health, the Honorable Kailesh Jagutpal, emphasized the importance of the role of companies for this kind of social action but also that of the public: “Thalassemia patients are a priority for my ministry. We are implementing protocols to ensure equal care for all. It is essential to set up awareness campaigns on thalassemia and I would like to thank Emtel for its initiative. I encourage other companies to follow suit. I also appeal to the general public on the importance of donating blood”.
For the managers of the NGO Thalassemia Society of Mauritius, this initiative meets a great need: “On behalf of the beneficiaries of our NGO, I would like to thank Emtel for its continued support. This blood drive is very important to us. It will allow us to ensure the treatment of our beneficiaries to treat this blood anomaly, it is necessary to regularly resort to blood transfusions in order to prevent complications linked to Thalassemia”, declared Amrita Vayid, the President of the NGO.
Thalassemia is an inherited blood disease that causes a decrease in red blood cells, and therefore the body has less hemoglobin. This is essential because it is what allows red blood cells to transport oxygen to all parts of the body. For this reason, people with this disease may suffer from anemia and children may suffer from growth retardation. Failure to receive treatment will cause excess iron and heart failure, followed by premature death.
