“Meg 2: The Deep” Makes Quick Transition from Cinemas to Streaming

It only opened in cinemas on August 3rd, attracted over a million people to movie theaters in this country and grossed over $390.7 million worldwide – and now “Meg 2: The Deep” with Jason Statham is already available in streaming!

Starting tomorrow, September 21st, Jason Statham will once again be having a blast alongside Sylvester Stallone in “The Expendables 4”. But fans of the British action star can already look forward to fresh supplies in streaming – because his last film found its way from the screen to the TV sets in a hurry:

“Meg 2: The Deep” only came to German cinemas on August 3, 2023, and less than seven weeks later it is now available for home viewing – as video-on-demand on Amazon Prime Video, among others:

Anyone who wasn’t in the cinema for the $130 million sequel to “The Meg” can now catch up on the over-the-top thriller from their sofa. As we now know, the price is slightly higher than usual VODs given the short cinema exclusive window. Especially compared to the cost of a cinema ticket, “Meg 2” is worth streaming from an economic point of view if you watch the film in a larger group (and share the costs). You can currently rent the film for 15.99 euros or buy it for 19.99 euros. DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray* are not expected to follow until November 2nd.

“Meg 2” is the latest film that is now available on VOD. Also already available on Amazon are: “Barbie”*, “Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny”*, “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts”*, “The Flash”*, “John Wick 4”*, “Spider- Man: Across The Spiderverse”* and “No Hard Feelings”*.

Is “Meg 2: The Deep” worth streaming?

While the production costs of “Meg 2” amounted to 129 to 139 million dollars, the film, which is still in the program of numerous cinemas, has so far grossed a respectable 390.7 million dollars worldwide. Over 1.041 million tickets have already been sold for it in Germany, which means it is currently ranked 13th in the international annual charts – ahead of much larger, more expensive productions such as “The Flash” and “Indiana Jones 5”. But is “Meg 2” even worth it?

This is exactly where the trade press and the audience don’t seem to agree: on the review platform Rotten Tomatoes (as of September 20, 2023), just 28 percent of critics gave a positive rating, which, in summary, was definitely fun for the sequel Attribute moments, but the film cannot offer much more. The cinema audience is a little more impressed by the megalodon spectacle, as a strong value of 73 percent positive votes underlines.

In the FILMSTARTS review, “Meg 2” ultimately only received 2 out of 5 possible stars – and therefore one star less than for “Meg”. Our editor-in-chief Christoph Petersen not only explains that more sharks doesn’t necessarily mean more fun, but above all criticizes that “The Deep” simply takes far too long to get going.

In part 2, Jonas Taylor, played by Jason Statham, and his colleagues (played by Chinese superstar Wu Jing) lead to previously little-explored territory in the middle of the ocean, which has also been targeted by an uncompromising mega-corporation. But then several gigantic prehistoric sharks appear on the scene – and plunge the research project into chaos…
