Meeting of the Prime Minister of Victoria with the President of ECM – 2024-09-29 02:27:29

In the first official meeting between its president Greek Community of Melbourne (ECM) Mr. Vassilis Papastergiadis and the Prime Minister of Victoria Jacinda Allan, the warm and welcoming atmosphere indicated that this will be followed by further discussions in the future.

In a friendly atmosphere, the Prime Minister of Victoria and the president of ECM discussed issues that concern Greek Australians living in Victoria. The meeting was also attended by government MPs Nikos Staikos, Kat Theofanous and Lee Tarlamis.

The Prime Minister noted that although she grew up in Bendigo, this did not prevent her from understanding the contribution of Greeks to our State. In fact, one of her close friends and neighbors was of Greek origin. The Greeks of Victoria have made significant contributions to the arts, education, commerce, sports and the wider society.

The Premier of Victoria said: “Greek culture is an important part of the identity of Melbourne and Victoria. It was my pleasure to meet with Vassilis Papastergiadis in person to discuss the Greek community and how we can work together to strengthen the Greek culture in Melbourne through events, festivals and educational programs. Our relationship with the Greek community is more than a collaboration. It’s a real friendship. We have achieved a lot together and will continue to build on it.”

One issue raised was the Premier’s recent announcement at the Multicultural Commission of Victoria’s formal dinner, regarding the naming of more than 6,000 streets, parks and public spaces after people from different cultural backgrounds. Mr. Vassilis Papastergiadis thanked the Prime Minister for this initiative, noting that “the recognition of our wonderful diversity is one of the defining characteristics of our state”. Mr. Papastergiadis added that “this announcement shows in clear terms how our multi-faceted identity is recognized in Victoria, so that our place in it is recorded for generations to come. Symbolism is an important part of how we and those around us see our place in this world.”

Afterwards, Mr. Papastergiadis spoke to the Prime Minister about the rich education and program of ECM emphasizing the importance of the language and its preservation. He also underlined the commitment of the wider community to this cause, highlighting the important infrastructure projects planned for Alphington Grammar and the other 2 Greek schools – St Johns and Oakleigh Grammar.

The Prime Minister also informed Mr Papastergiadis that she is committed to attending the Antipodes Festival in 2025. The Prime Minister emphasized that this is a highlight of Melbourne’s rich cultural events.

Mr. Papastergiadis concluded by saying that “Without a doubt, the Greek Community as a whole has gained a friend in the face of the Prime Minister. We have someone who cares about our community and a Prime Minister who wants to connect with us. If we include the hard work and presence of Steve Dimopoulos, Nikos Staikos, Kat Theofanous and Lee Tarlamis, our interests and needs are served very satisfactorily.”
