At the end of the meeting, Representative Osama Saad stated a summary of what resulted from the meeting
It was stated in his statement:
“The meeting was an inclusive Sidonian meeting, and there was the presence of His Eminence the Mufti of Sidon, the venerable bishops, as well as honorable fellow deputies and representatives of elected bodies, mukhtars, the Sidon Merchants Association, and the Sidon municipality.
Everyone gathered today to discuss the situation that took place in Ain al-Hilweh camp and the clashes that took place over two rounds and led to very significant damage, and had serious repercussions on the security of the city and the safety of its people, on its economy, schools, universities, its people, their property and their livelihoods, in addition to the destruction it caused inside the camp that affected the people of the camp. The Palestinian people and led to the displacement of the Palestinian brothers from their homes to the city, and also the displacement of the Lebanese in the reconstruction area and the emergency neighbourhood. Everyone was greatly harmed as a result of these clashes.
The meeting affirmed the rejection of all these clashes, and the refusal to resort to arms in dealing with the camp’s issues, and called on the Palestinian brothers of all factions to be alert to the danger of these clashes. They also demanded that they not be repeated and any resort to arms was rejected, because of its bad repercussions at various levels. Humanitarian, educational, economic, social and political, and because of the severe and serious harm it causes to the security of the city, the Palestinian people and the Lebanese national security.
They also stressed the establishment of a ceasefire after the agreement that took place yesterday, in which many forces participated at the central level, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as the security and military forces, in addition to the political efforts that we made here in Sidon as political forces. All of these efforts resulted in an agreement to stop the ceasefire. The shooting includes field procedures to establish the ceasefire, as well as procedures and work mechanisms to hand over the wanted persons accused of assassinating Major General Al-Armouchi and his companions.
For our part, we stress the importance of many not resorting to the camp as a safe haven for them. The camp’s people must live in safety and peace, because the peace of the camp is part of the peace and security of the city and the peace of the Lebanese national security, especially since Lebanon is experiencing difficult conditions at various levels. Financial and economic collapses, pressure resulting from the Syrian displacement, existing tensions in the country, and the social and living situation are all conditions that are harming the country, and the clashes come to increase the level of risks surrounding Lebanon.
Therefore, we must work to stabilize the ceasefire and establish serious mechanisms to prosecute all those who commit crimes and hand them over to the Lebanese authorities. This is essential and the responsibility of all the Palestinian forces, the responsibility of the political forces as well, and the responsibility of the Lebanese authority with its multiple tools.
Saad answered journalists’ questions by saying:
We are optimistic that the situation is heading toward calm and the establishment of a ceasefire, and tomorrow we are faced with the issue of opening schools and handing them over to UNRWA to carry out repairs. There are 6,000 students from inside the camp who must return to their schools, in addition to Sidon’s schools and universities that need reassurance that things are calm and that the clashes have stopped and will not. Renewed.
He added: The economic cycle must be renewed, and the people who were displaced must return to their homes.
He called on the government and the Higher Relief Commission to compensate those affected by these events, especially in the Sidon reconstruction, as there are houses that were completely destroyed, and a shelter allowance must be provided until their homes are repaired, as the people do not have the ability to repair.
He stressed that everyone is facing a test in adhering to what was agreed upon, and there is credibility, and I believe that the atmosphere is positive, and what is important is that clashes are not renewed and that there is a commitment not to resort to weapons, and we in the city with all its forces are ready to extend a helping hand, in addition to all political forces in Lebanon ready to help. In dealing with any issue related to the camp.
