Meeting Helena Moragas, Spanish Cadet Champion

Helena Moragas, the sacrifice paid off in Pontevedra

At 17, Helena Moragas has achieved her title of Champion of Spain in the cadet category, another success of the Car Sant Cugat factory directed by Jordi García by the Catalan Federation of Triatló.

We have talked to her to get to know her better

How do you get into triathlon?

I started triathlon at 11 I think it was a very demanding sport and at the same time fun, in the end it has been a sport that has been getting me more and more hooked. I came from practicing and competing in artistic gymnastics (a sport I dedicated myself to for 8 years) and horse riding, so surely I liked feeling the sensations of competition, so when I left I needed to find a new sport that would motivate me.

How has your evolution been in training since you started until now?

The assessment that I can make now looking back is totally positive. Three different modalities greatly encourage you to improve! You can always see results in some discipline or at the beginning, in all. Although sometimes it has been difficult for me to assimilate, also that everything has its moment and how important training is, how rest.

Tell us how is your normal week of training and daily life, before the Covid

Discipline is the word that best defines it. I combine studies and training throughout the day thanks to the scholarship that I enjoy at the CAR of Sant Cugat.

When I get home I have just enough time for homework and studying. My routine begins at 6:45 in the morning, I must arrive at the institute at 8:30 to start with the first classes that I will finish at 11:00 to go to training. Once the training sessions are over, we have time to eat and again we return to classes from 15:15 to 17:45. If we don’t train in the afternoon, I go home to study or go to academia, have dinner, and try to go to sleep around 11pm to have time off.

How was the confinement in terms of training?

I was coming out of a long injury, so thanks to confinement I managed to fully recover, I have to say that it passed quite quickly. Between the online work of the institute and the roller training on Skype with my team from the CAR, the Club and other times with my friends, they enlivened the process.

Luckily, thanks to my parents, I kept my gym work at home and was able to enhance those preventive workouts that we sometimes forget about, as well as stretches that are so important to avoid injury in the long run. In addition, it was very good for me to settle down and organize a little for the new situation and planning for the season.

Then you got to prepare for this championship, how has it been?

The most difficult thing was swimming, which I could not train during the period of confinement. But we did good height training at Font Romeu for 3 weeks with my coach Jordi García and my CAR group. These quality training sessions have been key to face this championship as I wanted, in addition to the days leading up to the championship we finished our preparation in the CAR.

Did you prepare the test for the CRI format?

We heard about the CRI the days before, but we were preparing for the championship knowing that there would be news. In fact, I faced the test with so much enthusiasm and enthusiasm that the format seemed appropriate to the situation and my personal preparation. I believe that triathlon is adaptation (so says my coach Jordi García) and we must know how to compete in any circumstance and race format.

How was the race?

Very well, the truth is that I did not expect to achieve this result. But she knew she was prepared both physically and mentally. Despite the fact that it has been a year of change and uncertainty, I felt just as we had planned during the race. A good swimming, a demanding bike circuit and the race on foot, fighting it until the finish line and enjoying the great day that Pontevedra offered us.

In your club you already have a few Spanish championships, how are things there, how are the coaches and teammates?

We work as a team for all Club competitions. FASTTRIATLON, is a benchmark in this sport. All my teammates are great and I feel great when I travel and compete with them. Albert Parreño does a great job.

Upcoming goals

My most immediate objective is the European Cup that will be held on September 6 in Banyoles

Another long term is to be able to continue training and continue working progressively in this sport nationally and internationally, and above all learn from the best. I would also like to play a good role at the national level, which allows me to live more experiences like those lived last year in the World Cup and in what was my first European in Austria.

After high school, will you go to college?

I’m still going to attend second year of high school, but I think I am considering two possibilities: Farmácia or genetics … time will tell.
