Meeting Biden in Bali, Wang Yi says China-US relations are in danger

BADUNG, KOMPAS.com – Chinese Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi told to US Secretary of State Antony Blink on Saturday (9/7/2022), that direction US-China relations is in danger of being further misled because of problems with the United States’ perception of China.

“Many people believe that the United States is suffering from increasingly serious attacks of ‘Chinaphobia’,” Wang was quoted as saying in a statement released by China’s Foreign Ministry, after Wang’s meeting with Blinken on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia.

Wang also said the US should cancel the additional tariffs imposed on China as soon as possible.

In addition, he asked the US to stop unilateral sanctions against Chinese companies.

Reported from Reuters, the negotiations between Wang and Blinken referred to the Chinese Foreign Ministry as a “deep” and “frank” meeting.

In addition, Wang said, the US side should be careful in its words and actions when it comes to Taiwan and should not send the wrong signal to the “Taiwan independence” troops.

According to the statement, the two sides also exchanged in -depth views on the “Ukraine issue”, without providing details.

Blinken calls meeting with Wang constructive

Meanwhile, Antony Blinken said the meeting with Wang Yi in Bali was a beneficial and constructive moment for both parties.

The two met on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting (FMM) in Nusa Dua, Badung, Bali.

During a press conference on Saturday, Blinken said that the US-China discussed the importance of expanding cooperation, despite the existence of trade competition and differences in political views between the US and China.

“I can confidently say that our delegation found today’s meeting (with Wang Yi) beneficial (for both parties), open and constructive. Going forward and beyond, the United States asks the lines of communication (with China) to remain open,” he said.

The meeting between Blinken and Wang Yi in Bali, which lasted for approximately 5 hours, was the first time the two met in person since October 2021.

Blinken said the US and China are committed to maintaining stable relations, not only in the interests of the two countries, but also the world.

“The relationship between the United States and China is not only important for the two countries, but also for the world. Therefore, we are committed to managing this relationship, the competition between us, responsibly,” he said.

At that moment, after the two attended the FMM on Friday, the US and China discussed several regional and global issues, including the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the nuclear program in North Korea.

“I took advantage of the meeting, to convey directly the approaches used by the US to China,” said Foreign Minister Blinken.

In the same meeting, the two Foreign Ministers also explored opportunities for cooperation in the fields of climate crisis management, food security, health, and narcotics eradication.

“These issues are global challenges that require big countries (such as the US and China) to carry out their roles in the international community,” said Blinken.

On the same occasion, Blinken also conveyed to Wang the US concerns about the restrictions on freedom in Hong Kong, the inhumane treatment of minority groups in Xinjiang and Tibet, and China’s actions against Taiwan.

“It’s not an easy issue to talk about, but the United States has always consistently voiced the importance of upholding human rights principles, not against China or other countries, but to maintain peace and security, and a dignified humanity,” said the US Secretary of State.
