Leader of three countries European Unionnamely Czech, Polish and Slovenian depart by train to Ukraine to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said the visit was made to show the EU’s support for Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.
“In times like these, we must be in a place that will make history. Because this is not about us, but the future of our children who deserve to live in a world free from tyranny,” said Morawiecki.
Reuters reported, Morawiecki was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski.
Meanwhile, the Czech Prime Minister, Petr Fiala, said that their visit this time was aimed at affirming the EU’s support for Ukraine.
“The purpose of this visit is to confirm the firm support of the entire European Union for the sovereignty and independence of Ukraine,” Fiala said, as quoted by CNN.
“Another goal of this visit is to provide a broad support package for Ukraine and its citizens.”
In addition to Fiala and Morawiecki, the Prime Minister of Slovenia, Janez Jansa, also took part in the visit.
Morawiecki’s main aide, Michal Dwoczyk, said the delegation had crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border by train at 8:00 am local time.
He also said that this visit was approved at the European Union Leaders’ Summit in Versailles, France, last week.
The trio became the first foreign leaders to visit the Ukrainian capital since Russia invaded the country on February 24.
The Czech Republic and Poland are member states of the European Union and NATO that have frequently shown their support for Ukraine since Putin decided to attack the country.
