BMW is finishing fine-tuning the second generation of the 2 Series, and a few days after its presentation it confirmed that Mexico will produce the Coupe version for the whole world.
“We are very excited to build a new vehicle exclusively at our plant. The decision to manufacture the BMW 2 Series Coupé in Mexico for the whole world shows that we are competitive and that we have a highly qualified workforce.
“I am confident that the arrival of this model will be a catalyst for development for the region and will promote our Plant as a world-class automotive manufacturing center,” said Harald Gottsche, president and CEO of the Group’s San Luis Potosí plant. BMW.
This plant, inaugurated in 2019, is the most modern that the BMW Group has in the world and was built in such a way that it could house, with minimal adjustments, the production of any vehicle of its Mini, BMW and Rolls-Royce brands, as well as well as 100% electric vehicles.
In these almost two years of operation, including the shutdown due to a pandemic and then due to the semiconductor crisis, just over 100,000 units of the seventh generation of Series 3 have been manufactured,
which is shipped to 36 markets in the world.
In total, the annual production capacity of this facility is 175 thousand vehicles, a figure that can be increased in the coming years, as the plant’s land has a lot of space without construction, considering future extensions.
“As the newest plant, San Luis Potosí benefits from the experience and best practices of the BMW Group’s Global Production Network. It is sustainable, innovative and highly flexible. Our highly motivated and qualified team is integrating this new model seamlessly into ongoing production, ”said Milan Nedeljkovic, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG and Head of Production.
The new Series 2
Formerly known as the 1 Series Coupé, this two-door sports car took on the 2 Series nomenclature in 2014, aligning itself with the new way in which BMW distinguishes sedans and coupes.
This sports car had its first generation as Series 1 Coupé in 2007, thus replacing the Series 3 Coupé, as the smallest vehicle with this configuration in the range, while in 2011 an M version of this model was launched, which was very successful. in the market, because of how close it was in size and performance to the first delivery of the M3 in the 1980s.
Still without much official data of the third generation of this car, the second under the name Series 2, BMW confirmed that it will begin to be produced in Mexico at the end of the summer of this year, to begin its sale in North America in the last months of 2021 and its arrival in Europe is planned for the beginning of next year.
“The new BMW 2 Series Coupé continues the brand’s own tradition of offering compact, high-powered, driver-oriented two-door cars that originated with the legendary BMW 2002.
“In terms of power delivery, traction, cornering dynamics and handling precision, the new BMW 2 Series Coupé meets the expectations of a particularly demanding group of customers who enjoy pure sportiness in a compact premium car,” stated the brand in a statement.
The arrival of a second model, with production for the whole world, at the San Luis Potosí plant speaks of the good workmanship that we have in our country.
