Meet the Michels: Michel Fugain and Other Artists of the 60s-80s Featured in a New Documentary

He figures prominently in the documentary All the singers are called are called Michel, devoted to artists from the 1960s to the 1980s named Michel, broadcast on Saturday April 22 at 9:10 p.m. on France 3. Michel Fugain alone is the party symbol.

What would you say to each of the Michels who are mentioned in the documentary?

Michael Fugain: Polnareff, I never met him. I ran into him once in a cinema. That’s all. Delpech, a weak boy. I loved him so much. He had easy contact, you felt the smart guy, which I didn’t feel with Polnareff, for example… Berger, I never met him and I regret it: a great melodist. Jonah, he’s a good guy, if a bit tortured.

You have a special story with Michel Sardou, don’t you?

I knew him when we were in drama school. We joined the Festival record company at the same time, he as a singer and I as a composer. It was military service that kept us away.

In this doc, we say that you are enthusiastic. Aren’t you also a committed singer?

I always see the glass as half full rather than half empty. I have the same enthusiasm as when I was 20. Even stronger still. When we sing, we are necessarily in tune with what is happening in society. If on stage you do two hours of navel-gazing songs, the audience leaves and doesn’t come back. I will never join a political party. But when I do The Red Cloth, I know where it’s going. Seeing people parading singing this title is my Legion of Honor!

What do you think of the current protest against the pension reform?

I am 81 years old, I am not directly concerned. But behind this protest, there is a question of purchasing power. People are unhappy. They may have hope that it will get better soon, but they don’t have long-term hope.

You recently criticized Julien Doré and Benjamin Biolay. With age, would you say that speech is freer?

I criticize certain types of behavior when it is not compensated by a contribution made to our profession. The song is a major art, contrary to what was said Gainsbourg. Mercantilism is harmful to creation. Rearranging a title or redoing what has already been done is useless.

How does the tour Fugain makes Bandapart, soon in Canada, does it consist?

I am with my musicians, technicians, and we form a band where everyone is important. With humanity, I address people’s sensitivities.
