Meet the eight boys who played a special role in King Charles and Queen Camilla’s Coronation

The eight boys, who have helped carry the coronation robes of King Charles (74) and Queen Camilla (75) during the magnificent coronation in Westminster Abbey in London on May 6, all have a very special place in the hearts of the royal couple.

Prince George (9) has been a natural choice, despite his young age. Usually, the so-called “page boys” are between 12 and 15 years old.

But not only is he second in line to the British throne, after his father Prince William (40) of Wales, but he is also the king’s eldest grandson – and according to sources close to the royal couple, he is also very mature for his age.

– Not exactly enjoying the attention

Princess Catherine (41) and Prince William are said to have taken several rounds with their eldest son ahead of the coronation, to make sure that this was a mission he could really imagine being part of – and not something he felt pressured into to.

To the British newspaper Mirror royal house expert Ingrid Seward (75) describes 9-year-old Prince George as a slightly shy boy, especially during public events – just like his father Prince William was at the same age.

– You can see it in his body language and attitude, that he clearly does not exactly enjoy the attention his royal role gives him.

The British royal house expert Seward was therefore surprised that Prince George was assigned this very public role during the coronation. But she is convinced that her parents Catherine and William have taken their precautions ahead of the mission.

– Both William and Catherine have thought very carefully about exposing George in this way, but after many discussions with him, they must have come to the conclusion that he would have regretted not doing so.

In an accident shortly before the page boys mission

Along with Prince George were also the young boys Lord Oliver Cholmondeley (13), Master Nicholas Barclay (13) and Master Ralph Tollemache (12).

They are all three children and grandchildren of the royal couple’s close friends, and are a natural part of their circle of friends.

Queen Camilla’s robe, which is the same as that worn by Queen Elizabeth when she was crowned in Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953, was worn by her twin grandsons Master Gus and Master Louis Lopes (13), grandson Master Freddy Parker Bowles (13) and great-nephew Master Arthur Elliot (11).

The former 13-year-old, Gus, arrived at the coronation with one arm in a sling after he managed to break his arm in a cycling accident shortly before the historic event.

But grandson Gus took the task head on (one, mind you), and performed the honorable mission with flying colors.

These are the eight “page boys”:

Prins George (9):

King Charles’ eldest grandson, and the son of Prince William and Princess Catherine. Is second in line to the British throne, after his father. Despite his young age, he has participated in several public functions – and there will be more in the future.

Lord Oliver Cholmondeley (13):

The son of filmmaker Lord David Cholmondeley, 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley and Rose Hanbury. Both families have close ties to the royal family, and Rose Hanbury’s grandmother was a bridesmaid when Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip married in 1947. Oliver has a twin brother Alexander, who for unknown reasons has not been selected to be one of the page boys.

Master Nicholas Barclay (13):

The son of solicitor Piers Barclay and Rose Trouton. She is one of the many godchildren of King Charles, and is the daughter of mustard heiress Sarah Troughton. The family is behind Colman’s Mustard. Sarah Troughton is also designated as one of Queen Camilla’s so-called “Queen’s Companions”, a form of assistant, newly introduced by Camilla. She no longer wanted to continue the “Lady-in-waiting” tradition.

Master Ralph Tollemache (12):

When Ralph’s parents Edward and Sophie Tollemache got married in 2007, the then Prince Charles was one of the guests at the wedding. He is the society couple’s eldest son, and is well known in royal circles despite his young age. His grandfather Timothy Tollemache bears the stately title of 5th Baron Tollemache.

His father Edward, who is one of King Charles’ godsons, was “Page of Honour” for Queen Elizabeth in the period 1988 to 1990.

Master Gus and Master Louis Lopes (13):

The twin sons of Queen Camilla’s daughter Laura Lopes and her husband Harry Lopes. They have a close relationship with their grandmother Camilla, and also gradually developed a close relationship with their stepfather Charles. The brothers’ older sister Eliza Lopes (15) was also one of the bridesmaids when Prince William and Catherine Middleton got married in April 2011. She was led in by the bride’s sister Pippa Middleton.

Master Freddy Parker Bowles (13):

Freddy is also one of Queen Camilla’s grandchildren. He is the child of the Queen’s son Tom Parker Bowles and his ex-wife Sara Buys. They filed for separation in 2018, after 12 years of marriage. They also have daughter Lola Parker Bowles (15), who is naturally one of the guests at her grandmother’s and stepgrandfather’s coronation.

Master Arthur Elliot (11):

Queen Camilla’s great-nephew, and the grandson of Camilla’s sister Annabel Elliot. Arthur’s parents are businessman Benjamin William Elliot and Mary-Clare Winwood. They married in 2011, the same year as Prince William and Princess Kate.
