If you’ve ever cycled through or walked past the tunnel at the Rijksmuseum, there’s a good chance you’ve seen him play. For a few years now, Shandon Sahm preferred to play his guitar near the museum. “This is the best place, but the Rijks has many places.”
Shandon lives anonymously in Amsterdam, but has some fame in his home state of the US. He shares his last name with famous blues artist Doug Sahm.
That was really his father. “Many people knew Dad. Bob Dylan was a fan of his music, as was Jerry García of the Grateful Dead.” He shows a shirt with a print of his father on it. “What he did was a little special, but this is for the people who know him.”
A spot directly in front of the bike tunnel at the Rijks was chosen today for Shandon. He plays some songs with Harry Styles and Pharrell Williams, but not much. “It’s not about the money for me, I keep myself on my toes and it’s about the music.”
Shandon’s lack of experience with a famous musician as his father was an added burden. “I would ask Jakob Dylan or Sean Lennon. Their fathers are very famous. I always tell the Texas audience, ‘I’m not my father, but I can give that Sahm vibe. to you he was famous.’
The De Spot section is part of the Damsko program.
