Rise as a parting gift
In Patric Pfeiffer, FC Augsburg have signed one of the most sought-after central defenders of last year’s second division season. The 23-year-old will get a taste of Bundesliga air for the first time in his career with the Fuggerstadt team. Portrait of the newcomer.
Patric Pfeiffer has played a total of 80 games for SV Darmstadt 98 in the past four years. Despite his young age, the 23-year-old was one of the most experienced defenders in the 2nd Bundesliga. However, the German-Ghanaian did not complete his football training with Lilien, but with Hamburger SV.
Pfeiffer, who was born in Hamburg, has played for the Rothosen since he was a junior. The 1.96 meter tall defensive giant made it into the squad for the first team at the age of 19, but he never made his professional debut. Instead, the defensive player was mostly on the pitch with the second team of the Hanseatic League in the Regionalliga Nord, where he played a total of 23 games between 2017 and 2019 and scored two goals.
For the 2019/20 season, the young central defender turned his back on his hometown and joined second division competitor Darmstadt 98. In the lilies, Pfeiffer worked hard for his success and was ultimately rewarded. Under coach Dimitrios Grammozis, he made his professional debut on Matchday 15 and made five more appearances for Lilien that same season. However, it took another year before the central defender was able to develop his full potential at the southern Hessen side.
Most dangerous central defender in the 2nd Bundesliga
Under Torsten Lieberknecht, who took over as coach in Darmstadt in 2021, Pfeiffer became the undisputed regular player. The central defender played a total of 55 second division games under the 49-year-old football coach, who attested his protégé an “incredible overall package”. Pfeiffer not only convinces on the defensive with his strong athleticism and duel strength, but also radiates danger in front of the opposing goal. Last season, the 23-year-old was the most prolific central defender in league two with four goals and one assist.
After the defender was able to crown his time in Darmstadt with promotion to the Bundesliga, he will put on the red, green and white jersey in the future and thus appear in the German upper house for the first time in his career. “The talks with those responsible at FCA convinced me that I have the best conditions here with an established Bundesliga club to go down the path together in the Bundesliga,” says Pfeiffer, who has a long-term contract in Augsburg until June 30, 2027 signed.
