Meet Otist: The Committed and Anonymous Stencil Artist Disciple of Banksy

Otist is a committed and anonymous stencil artist. He is the guest of the Street Art Fest of Grenoble which takes place from May 26 to July 2, 2023 in the capital of the Alps. Meeting with this artist from Isère, disciple of Banksy.

“I am a committed artist, a stencil artist who tries to describe the world around him to try to open up certain consciences and above all, I want to have fun, because I remain an artist.” This is what Otist answers when asked who he is.

Otistit’s his pseudonym, his stage name, his signature. And that’s about all we know about him. His real name, age and face too, are unknown. “We don’t care who I am, the important thing is the message I want to convey”, he said.

Anonymous, stencil artist, engaged… Chez him, we find a little of “Banksy”. A filiation that the artist from Isère claims: “It’s an example and the first stencils I saw were his in London and when I came back I said to myself, I have to get on it. I’m able to do things like that, I have things to say and the stencil allows me to do a painting quite quickly while talking to people.

The environment, the earth, the planet, are the favorite themes of the artist: Cis our nerve, it’s the future of our children, so it’s important, afterwards, I can talk as much about ecology, the planet as about social problems, politics, I touch the world a little bit of today what surrounds us.”

Last year, the artist had produced a work to raise awareness of forest fires, after the fire in Voreppe in particular.

The environmental cause, social injustices or even the race for profit, in the capital of Isère and in the neighboring municipalities… The works ofOtist appear on the walls or under the bridges with each time a message.

One of his recent works, “Big Pharma”represents a Rambo, face closed, armed with a syringe: “On this work, there is an ironic side, it is to speak of the big companies which make profits on the patients, the hospitals when we see companies like Sanofi which makes 47 billion profits in the face of 500,000 million deficits French hospitals so Rambo, he actually doesn’t really want to smile.

Recently, the artist produced two works, one near the Grenoble University Hospital and the other next to the mutualist clinic, to denounce the lack of resources of hospitals and the inaction of the State to support caregivers.

Two stencils representing Emmanuel Macron as a hospital gravedigger:Merci to all the nursing staff who work in pitiful conditions on a daily basis. Endless guards, a lack of staff and a lack of means, we think of you and we support you 100%“, indicates the artist.

Otist is currently exhibited at the House of Associations of Pont de Claix, the city has been associated since 2018 with the Street Art Fest in Grenoble. The meeting, which takes place this year from May 26 to July 2, 2023, has become an unmissable event in the world of street art.
