Meet Nelly Klinger, Chef and Owner of Arepa Lady – A Legacy of Delicious Arepas

My name is Nelly Klinger, I am the chef here at Arepa Lady and this is my favorite Arepa.

“The ingredients we make for that arepa are the following: we add meat, chicken, and we also add chorizo to make a mixed arepa.”

Recipe created by the Arepa Lady herself, who started her business from a cart in Jackson Heights.

“This idea, this recipe originally came from María Piedad Cano, she started on the streets approximately 30 years ago and from there we continue her legacy and that is why we are here in the restaurant offering one of the best arepas, which is the cheese arepa in the which she started working and became very famous,” added the chef.

A legacy that Chef Nelly along with Alejandro, her husband, owner, and son of the Arepa Lady, are committed to continuing.

“When she worked on the street and made those arepas with so much love and it happened to us like that tenderness that means making an arepa and having the customer eat it because it is made with love,” said Nelly.

“One thing my mother has taught us is consistency, we use the same products, the same ingredients, the same recipe, everything doesn’t change anything, so we stay the same,” said Alejandro Osorio.

And for Nelly and Alejandro the work does not end here, the business has grown with 3 locations and their plans are to continue innovating and providing more options on their menu.

“We are implementing a ‘brunch’, so bringing arepas with different products with egg and bacon, we are going to innovate,” said Nelly.

However, Arepa Lady’s success is in what the food means to people and where it transports them with each bite.

“I believe that food unites us all. It also brings us memories of our childhood. I grew up eating arepas in my mother’s cart, so when I try it I remember a lot of that childhood of mine and I believe that it is the same for everyone, and it is food as a love language,” Alejandro said.
