Energetic, safe and full of confidence – this can describe the youngest colleague of the canine center of the State Border Guard College – Miss Dog Hera. The five-month-old puppy came from Austria. She has a special specialization – searching for human scent. Currently, Hera spends her daily life with an experienced cynologist – sergeant Linda Bumbiša, inspector of the Cynological Center of the Border Guard College’s Cynological Service.
“The first day I saw her, I was like – oh, how beautiful she is! Really, that combination of colors, confidence, stateliness is very beautiful on her! This little dog has a lot of courage! She can enter rooms where she has not been, and feels safe,” Bambisha said.
The real name “Hera La Doue” is a Belgian Shepherd puppy. One of her tasks is to find a person in the environment with the help of smell. For example, she might have to look for people who have crossed the border illegally in the future.
“Dogs with these specializations work more on the external border, or the green border. They help border surveillance to be carried out in a better quality. They patrol the border with these dogs, and these dogs with these specializations are better able to detect signs of possible illegal violations. In case of need, the dogs follow tracks, finds and detains persons,” said the canine specialist.
Hera is currently still studying. At first, a good relationship with the teacher must be established; then you have to learn the commands. In her work, not only sense of smell will be important, but also hearing, sight and patience. “We also teach the dog not to be afraid to cross any insurmountable obstacles. Let that courage appear in the dog,” added the cynologist.
The head of the Canine Service of the Border Guard College, Colonel Aleksandr Petrovskis stated: “With us, at the Canine Center, cynologists with service dogs take part in the training process, as our main task is to organize professional training.”
By purchasing service dogs abroad, the State Border Guard College plans to obtain high-quality puppies to supplement the gene pool of service dogs. In order not to have closely related dogs, they are sought in distant countries.
“In order to get a better gene pool, better puppies, it is necessary that the mother and father are not related. Because of this, we bought the puppy in distant countries, for example, Germany, Austria,” said Petrovsky.
Currently, there are ten dogs in the Canine Center of the Border Guard College, which are attached to cynologists. Seven of them are patrol dogs, or those who specialize in the search for human scent, while two specialize in the search for narcotics and one for explosives. On the other hand, Hera’s big exam is still ahead when she will be almost two years old.
