Because he courageously helped an unconscious driver, Marc Ziesche was named “Road Hero” of the month by the Automobile Club of Germany. The 45-year-old IT specialist was traveling with his four children when he noticed between Weißenhorn and the access road to the A7 in the Bavarian district of Neu-Ulm how a car in front of him was slowing down: the 22-year-old driver was behind the wheel suffered a seizure.
“At first it seemed that the driver wanted to turn right, but the car slowed down and suddenly steered in the direction of the oncoming lane,” Marc Ziesche recalls that day. To assess the situation, the 45-year-old overtook the car on the right and saw through the side window that the driver was apparently unconscious and bleeding from the mouth. The IT specialist didn’t hesitate and parked his car in front of the young man’s car. He then braked his car, bringing the driverless vehicle to a standstill. At that moment, he didn’t think about any damage that could occur to his car. “I just acted,” says Marc Ziesche.
But then it got a little hectic, because the car now blocked Ziesche’s driver’s door. He asked his 15-year-old daughter to call an ambulance and climbed past her on the passenger side to rush to the unconscious driver’s aid. The 22-year-old had apparently suffered a seizure. But the vehicle doors were locked. After another car driver came to help Marc Ziesche, the two decided to smash the window in the passenger door. That succeeds.
“The driver was convulsing badly and we were trying to keep his jaws apart so he wouldn’t bite off his tongue,” says the first responder. Luckily, it only took about five minutes for the ambulance to arrive. The police and fire brigade were also there quickly. The 22-year-old was then taken to a nearby hospital and treated.
For his exemplary commitment, Marc Ziesche received the “Road Hero of the Month April” award from cooperation partner Kia, a Sportage plug-in hybrid in the “Kia Flex” car subscription for two weeks and 1000 kilometers. In addition, fuel and electricity costs of 250 euros will be reimbursed.
Every month, the AvD is looking for committed people who have behaved in a particularly exemplary manner in critical accident situations. The automobile club accepts suggestions under the keyword “Hero of the Road” and the e-mail address [email protected]. The traffic safety campaign is supported not only by Kia but also by the magazine “Auto Verkehr”. (awm)
