This is called having the double hat. A customer receptionist in the morning at the post office in Paimboeuf (Loire-Atlantique), Cyril Randon puts on his helmet and gets on his bike in the afternoon to go and deliver letters and parcels in the adjacent arteries, from the street Cordiers at Quai Edmond-Libert.

After Frossay and Saint-Viaud – and soon Saint-Père-en-Retz

– since Tuesday June 20, 2023, the Paimblotins have had a counter-postman. By the end of the year, there will be 2,000 to exercise this dual profession on the national territory, mainly in rural areas.

Compensate for the drop in mail

This is one of the three solutions found by La Poste to compensate for the drop in mail (and therefore in activity), with the creation of a municipal postal agency (often in the town hall) or the establishment of postal services in a trade.

In Paimbœuf, as elsewhere, office traffic has been in sharp decline for several years.

We have gone from an average of 110 customers per day in 2012 to 23 today.

Reduced amplitude at the counter

Previously open all day, the counter has gradually seen its opening hours reduced to morning hours only. The question of its maintenance therefore arose.

The subject is sensitive, especially in small towns since the Post Office has public service missions… In agreement with the municipality, the company has opted to set up this postman-counter service.

After six years of rolling around as a postman in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins, Cyril Randon jumped at the chance.

“Be in contact with customers”

The role fits him like a glove.

Before joining the Post Office, I worked for a long time in commerce. I wanted to be more in contact with customers and discover another profession.

The 55-year-old Ch’ti also sees a possible gateway to the job of account manager.

The versatility of his mission also appealed to the postman-counter. “There is of course the postage, the mobile post services. We also do a lot of banking: withdrawals, payments… In Paimbœuf, we also have the DAB (cash dispenser, editor’s note) to manage. Every day is different”.

Close relationship
La Poste highlights the close relationship established with a single point of contact for customers.

“Cyril is identified at the ticket office and during his tour. For some, it has a reassuring side. They know the person passing by. There is a real link with the population that is being created, ”underlines Pauline Jarry, press officer for the group.

In fact, we have transformed this old profession of receiving into a postman-counter.

For now, the Paimboeuf post office is open 2.5 hours a day, in the morning, from Tuesday to Saturday. “It’s a break-in period. We will adapt according to the feedback we get. For the moment, they are rather good”, slips the distribution manager.

In the Pays de Retz, postmen and counters are also located in Port Saint-Père, Tharon Plage and Corcoué-sur-Logne.

The Paimboeuf post office (71, rue du Général de Gaulle) is open Tuesday to Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.Follow all the news from your favorite cities and media by subscribing to Mon Actu.
