The Operational Command noted that Shapovalov was introduced to the staff by the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Alexander Pavlyuk.
Shapovalov himself confirmed that he accepted the role thanks to the powerful work of Andrei Kovalchuk, the former head of Yug OK.

What is known about Shapovalov
As specified in OK “Yug”, Shapovalov was born in 1978 in the Kirovograd region. In 2000 he graduated from the Institute of Tank Forces at the Kharkov State Polytechnic University with honors, and in 2012 – the Command and Staff Institute for the Use of Forces at the National Defense University of Ukraine.
He went through all stages of his military career from the commander of a tank platoon to the commander of a separate motorized infantry brigade named after Yakov Handzyuk and in 2022 he received the rank of brigadier general.
Shapovalov is also a graduate of the US Army War College, where senior US Ground Forces officers are trained.
“This level of education and breadth of ideas characterizes today’s commanders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a powerful intellectual capacity of the military based on international knowledge,” the Executive Order emphasized.
