Drawing Champions League quarter-finals bring together Liverpool with Benfica. On paper, the Reds are definitely seeded to advance to the semifinals.
The draw for the Champions League quarter-finals was held in Nyon, Switzerland, Friday (18/3/2022). Liverpool get a relatively light opponent, when considering the other teams they could potentially face, such as Bayern Munich, Atletico Madrid, Manchester City, Chelsea or Real Madrid.
Liverpool also has a more classy team composition, which strengthens its status as superior in front of Benfica. Jürgen Klopp believe this is precisely a thought trap that could trip Liverpool.
For him Benfica have every reason to be taken as seriously as the top European teams. This season alone, the team, which has been a Champions League finalist seven times, was able to qualify from a group containing Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
“It’s a quarter-final match, so yes it’s tough. Benfica obviously played very well against Ajax (16th) and that’s the situation,” said Jurgen Klopp on Liverpool’s official website.
“I know people will say we’re the favorites and stuff, but that’s the first mistake you can make. We’ve been in this business too long to make a mistake like that.”
“I’m just really looking forward to it. I have a lot of respect for what they’re doing there, a massive club,” said the German.
