“Meet Asim Richards, Cowboys’ Fifth-Round Pick for Offensive Line Depth”

Since before the 2023 NFL Draft, the Cowboys were expected to bolster their offensive line. Especially at left guard, where they don’t have a starter after the departure of Connor McGovern. However, the cowboy team waited until the fifth round to fill that void. The chosen one, with the overall selection #169, is offensive lineman Asim Richards.

The North Carolina product started 28 games out of 29 played between 2020 and 2022. In those games, Richards played mostly offensive tackle. However, this young lineman can also play guard. And this, as we well know, is something that Dallas is looking for in its offensive linemen these days: versatility to play multiple positions.

Primarily, Richards offers a good run blocking performance. This prospect has a great combination of strength and range, along with having over 2,500 offensive snaps played. However, his athleticism, inconsistent footwork and his pass protection performance are the main concerns for this rookie.

As a fifth-round pick, the Cowboys will most likely opt to use Asim Richards at backup guard or tackle. Although the team needs a starting left guard, it remains to be seen if they go with someone already on their roster (Tyler Smith, Matt Farniok, Chuma Edoga or Josh Ball). Or, if they will give Richards a vote of confidence.
