“Meet Artistic Make-Up Artist Martin Valeš, The Mastermind Behind The Authentic Looks of Czech TV Series Volha”

The series Volha from the Czech TV studio follows the life of Standa Pekárek for almost twenty years, from 1971 to 1990. His representative Kryštof Hádek (41), and not only him, must age quite significantly in front of the camera. And this is where the artistic make-up artist Martin Valeš comes in, who takes care of all the masks and especially the wigs in the series. “When I put on the mask, I no longer see myself, but Standa Pekárka,” Hádek revealed to the eXtra.cz editors, and Valeš added how many wigs he had to make just for him.

His professional career was decided by the series. When Martin Valeš watched the series Sons and Daughters in the eighties Jakub the glassmaker, he was interested in the fact that the then fifty-year-old Luděk Munzar was playing a nineteen-year-old young man. So he began to take a more detailed interest in the craft of an artistic make-up artist and eventually he became one. Now he is in charge of the entire cast of the Volga series and takes care to create an impression of the authenticity of the years of socialism in our country from the point of view of fashion.

Three wigs were made for the Baker

He honestly prepared for work on the series. Above all, the representative of the main character, actor Kryštof Hádek.First of all, I called him and asked him what else he was going to shoot or is shooting. I wanted to know what he would look like in the period before the Volga, what kind of hairstyle he would have. He told me that he has a contract for two more films – The Last Race and Grand Prix. He sent me photos, and it was clear to me at that moment that if he wanted to look like someone from the seventies, I had no choice but to prepare him wigs for the Volga.” Valeš described to the eXtra.cz editors.

So we see the fight on the screens with hair and sideburns that are much longer than his real ones. How long does such a transformation into a Czech from the seventies take? “I used to come very early in the morning to shoot Volga. Just putting on the wig took an hour. Overall, I he replaced three masks, because my character Standy the Baker goes through about thirty years of time in the series period,” said Hádek.

“Then when we needed to make him older and make-up artist Martin Valeš was gluing on my face silicone layers because of wrinkles, I sat in his chair for three hours. But I would like Martin’s work picked up. His wigs look great and his masks look realistic. What he does is truly a work of art.” praised the work of makeup artists Kryštof Hádek. And that he does his craft really well. I find out what can be done with a mask and a costume. And I no longer see myself, but maybe just Standa Baker,” he added with a smile.

Make-up artist Martin Valeš is no newcomer to this field. In addition to the Volga series, he has already work on projects such as České stóltie, Bohéma, Zdivočelá země or Božena. For this miniseries, he was nominated for the Czech Lion in the Best Masks category.
