Meet Alexa Avilés, the councilor who bets on a vision of social work for a change in the community | Your Political City New York

On a Wednesday afternoon in Coffey Park, Alexa Avilés sits next to some women who talk, among themselves, in Spanish. These women are residents of Red Hook, the largest low-cost condominium in Brooklyn and the second largest in New York City. Coffey Park is across from Red Hook West and that day, Aviles is there with members of Vocal-NYC, an organization that promotes the prevention of overdose deaths, to teach residents how to use Naloxone. For a moment, Aviles leaves his post to walk through the park and the playground with a local resident. Before they return home, Avilés says goodbye to each individual woman, and calls them by name. “I should have been a social worker,” she tells me.
