Meet Abdullah Hammoud, The First Muslim Mayor in the US

Abdullah Hammoud | was elected Mayor of Dearborn, on Tuesday (2/11). Hammoud becomes the first Muslim mayor in United States of America.

“To the girls and boys who have been bullied because of their creed or ethnicity, to those of you who have felt that their names have been disliked, and to our parents and anyone else’s parents who have ever been embarrassed because of their broken English, but kept trying, today. it’s proof that you’re an American like everyone else, and a new era in Dearborn,” Hammoud said.

According to his official website, Hammoud was educated at Dearborn Public School. Not only that, he holds three degrees at the University of Michigan.

Hammoud holds a bachelor’s degree in biology, and a master’s degree in public health and business administration.

Hammoud is also a regional representative of district 15. The 31-year-old man is from Lebanon. Hammoud’s parents are said to have migrated from Lebanon to the US, quoted from the Associated Press.

Citing the official website of the University of Michigan, Hammoud is the first Arab-US descent to assume responsibility as a regional councilor. His father worked as a truck driver and his mother owned a small business.

Hammoud is the second of five children, quoted from The National News. He is married to Fatima Beydoun.

For Hammoud, if he was elected mayor, he paved the way for other minorities to enter US politics.

“I don’t think being first is a huge success,” Hammoud said.

“I think people with similar names like me, with different beliefs, who sound and look different, who do a good job, and you’re not the last, that’s going to be the norm.”
