Medvedev’s Disgraceful Behavior: Should He Be Disqualified?

Daniil Medvedev had a lot of luck in the clash with Christopher Eubanks. The higher-ranked Russian returned from 1-2 and after five sets advanced to the semi-finals, but during the third set he hit the camera operator’s ball. In the past, such behavior resulted in disqualification.

Daniil Medvedev (3rd ATP) needed five sets to deal with much lower ranked Christopher Eubanks (43rd ATP) – 6:4, 1:6, 4:6, 7:6(4), 6:1 – and advance to the semi-finals, where he will face the first seeded Carlos Alcaraz.

Medvedev’s disgraceful behavior. He had a lot of luck. He should be disqualified

The meeting started as planned. The Russian quickly broke his rival and brought the lead to the end of the set. The problems started only after an hour of play. Eubanks, having the first break points of the game, unexpectedly won the game on Medvedev’s pass – and a double. The situation repeated itself at the beginning of the third set and it got very nervous from the perspective of a sure favourite. And the American showed during the tournament that he can afford to compete with the best. He beat Stefanos Tsitsipas (5th ATP) or Cameron Norrie (13th ATP).

Medvedev’s frustration grew and reached its zenith at 3:5. Eubanks made a successful short cut to 40-0. The winner of the US Open 2021 did not have time to reach him, and out of rage he shot the ball in front of him. It was bad luck that he hit the camera operator. He immediately raised his hand in apology, but was booed by the audience anyway.

The referee gave him a warning, but the tennis player wanted to talk to him anyway, so he made his way to the referee’s stool and made his arguments in French. Medvedev should be pleased that he only received a warning, as the players had already been disqualified for hitting the court staff with the ball.

Most recently, at Roland Garros, Miyu Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi accidentally hit a ball girl. The hottest example of disqualification for similar behavior is Novak Djokovic during the US Open 2020. After the end of the game in the meeting with Pablo Carreno Busta, the Serb shot the ball behind him, hitting the line judge in the larynx. It cost him advancement to the next round and possibly a calendar Grand Slam.

Daniil Medvedev got a chance to still appear in the tournament. The Russian will play his semi-final against Carlos Alcaraz on Friday. The gentlemen have already met at Wimbledon in 2021. At that time, the older of them, 27-year-old from Moscow, easily won in three sets. However, the Spaniard is now a completely different player.
