Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev revealed this in a message on his Telegram account on Friday (24/2/2023).
Medvedev is currently deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council. His comments come a year after Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in what it called a “special military operation” to protect Russian speakers and ensure its own safety.
“Victory will be won. We all want it to happen as soon as possible. And that day will come,” emphasized Medvedev.
He predicted tough negotiations with Ukraine and the West would end in “some kind of deal”.

But he said the deal would lack “fundamental agreements on real borders” and not the same as a comprehensive European security pact, making it important for Russia to expand its borders now.
“That is why it is so important to achieve all the goals of special military operations. To push back the border that threatens our country as far as possible, even if it is the Polish border,” Medvedev said.
Poland shares a long eastern border with Ukraine and with Russia’s ally Belarus, and a border some 200 km in its northeastern corner with the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad.
