New York (AP) – Daniil Medvedev from Russia is in the final of the US Open and will meet either Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev from Hamburg or the Serb Novak Djokovic. The number two seeded Medvedev won his semi-final against the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime on Friday 6: 4, 7: 5, 6: 2.
For the 25-year-old, it is the third Grand Slam final of his career after the US Open 2019 and the Australian Open at the beginning of the year. He has not yet won any.
“I don’t think I played my best tennis, but I’m happy to be in the final on Sunday,” said Medvedev in a first reaction on the field at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
On the way to the final, Medvedev fended off two set balls from Auger-Aliassime in the second set at 3: 5, who then completely lost the thread. Medvedev continued to play at a very high level in the third round and took the break to 2-1 early on. After a total of 2:04 hours, he moved into the final on Sunday (10:00 p.m. CEST) without losing any further set. In the whole tournament he only made one set.
Zverev also had to give up one set before the semi-final duel with Djokovic (1.00 a.m. CEST on Saturday) and hopes after the success at the Olympic Games on the way to the gold medal for another big win against number one in the tennis world rankings. If Djokovic makes it into the final, the Serb still has the chance of the Grand Slam, i.e. victories in Melbourne, London, Paris and New York within one calendar year. In addition, with the 21st victory in a Grand Slam, he could take over the record shared so far with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal alone.
