Medvedev clearly denies Grand Slam to Djokovic and wins first major at US Open

Daniil Medvedev, born in Moscow 25 years ago, this Sunday wrote his name in tennis history, by winning the 2021 edition of the US Open. The Russian not only inscribes his name in the prestigious group of Grand Slam tournament champions, but also prevents the Serbian Novak Djokovic, world number one, complete the historic Grand Slam calendar and reach the 21st Major title, which would be a new men’s record.

The Russian, world number two and playing in his third Grand Slam final of his career — after losing at the US Open 2019 (Nadal) and the Australian Open 2021 (Djokovic), has beaten the 34-year-old Serbian by 6- 4, 6-4 and 6-4, at 2:15 am, in a match in which he was always better than the record holder for weeks in the ATP rankings and that he could have ‘fixed’ it sooner, had he not trembled the first time he served for the title, 5-2 in the third set, a game in which he lost his serve for the first (and only…) time.

Fresher physically and mentally than an opponent who played another five hours (and lost another five sets), Medvedev, who has long been on the lookout for a Grand Slam title, has once again shown that he can beat the best players in the world (and in the history) on the biggest stages and never gave a great chance to the Serb who, although very supported by the public (and celebrities), who wanted to see history, could never find a way to overcome Russian, and was almost always lost from a tactical point of view.
