The United States resumed deportations to Russia, interrupted shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine. The Guardian writes about it.
According to the newspaper, a few days ago a man was expelled from the United States to Russia, who fled from mobilization and tried to get asylum. It arrived in the United States via Mexico.
According to the lawyer, the migration authorities, which considered the Russian’s application, came to the conclusion that the threat of being sent to the troops was not sufficient grounds for granting asylum. Similar rulings have been issued against three more of her clients in Russia, but they are now awaiting appeal.
The Guardian notes that it is not clear when the deportation as a whole was resumed. Officially, the Migration Service only confirmed to the publication that they are currently sending Russian citizens home.
The US announced a suspension of deportations to Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Hungary, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Slovakia in early March 2022, less than two weeks after Russian troops invaded Ukraine. The reason for this was called the “humanitarian crisis”.
