Meditation or stupidity? A new strange trend among young people – 2024-08-18 20:32:59

A new social media trend is challenging people to do absolutely nothing during their flights. From looking at the phone to sleeping or even eating

It makes travelers indulge in the art of idleness, but to the limit. Watching movies, reading books and any other type of entertainment is completely prohibited. All the passenger can do is stay put and spend the hours of the flight looking ahead or out the window.

The craze first caught on among young TikTok users who seemed to want a break from mobile devices and screens. The trend became known as “rawdogging” – a term that cannot be translated literally into Bulgarian.

The word is generally used colloquially in a completely different context – to have unprotected sex. In the new trend, however, it has another meaning, which is associated with the display of self-control while flying.

Passengers must refrain from any forms that may distract them from the flight itself. This also applies to movies, music, books, eating and even napping. The only exception is that they can follow the map on the flight itself.

The seemingly ridiculous challenge became a hit online. TikTok users share their experiences and compete to see who has traveled the longest distance with the fewest amenities.

Manchester City football star Erling Haaland also joined the game. He recently uploaded a clip of his “no phone, no sleep, no water, no food” experience on a plane and found it was “easy” to achieve.

Participants seem to aim to test their minds. It is striking that the challenge is spread mainly among men who want to prove their endurance.

Some users and travel influencers claim that these types of flights lead to greater awareness and are a good way to “detox” from technology. But experts aren’t so convinced.

Medical experts warn of serious health risks if long flights go without consuming food and water.

“Getting away from the screen may be helpful, but anything else is against medical advice. The whole risk of long flights is that you’re at risk of dehydration. If you’re not moving, you’re at risk of deep vein thrombosis, which is exacerbated by dehydration,” explains GP Jill Jenkins, quoted by the BBC.

The challenge is often associated with meditation, but experts point out that it’s not the same thing. Meditation should be practiced in much quieter spaces while following the steps of professionals.

Approaching this trend is not for everyone. Users admit that they tried, but quickly found that it was a real torture. And others question whether all the people who boast of having survived such flights actually adhere to the self-imposed rules.
