The provincial governor also calls on vulnerable people to wear such FFP2 masks instead of regular cloth masks.
“The filtering capacity of those masks is much greater,” confirms virologist Marc Van Ranst. “So they stop more, so that you can also use them to protect yourself. Surgical masks only stop large drops. They only make sense if everyone wears them in a room. In busy places, for example a full tram, where not everyone always wears it, patients at risk can benefit from such a mask, but the disadvantage is that they are more expensive.”
Medimundi is now donating 10,000 masks to Kom op tegen Kanker. The University of Antwerp will also hand out FFP2 masks to students who come to take exams.
