Medicine opens in Taranto: the inauguration with Prime Minister Conte

TARANTO – A little less than three months before the adaptation work begins, almost everything is ready. Only a few details are missing to complete the setting up of furnishings and scientific laboratories at the headquarters of the degree course in Medicine in Taranto on 12 October, the date and occasion on which the Prime Minister will cut the ribbon of the prestigious headquarters in Piazza Ebalia (property of the former Bank of Italy). The confirmation arrived yesterday during the session of the General States for the university called in the Prefecture and which was followed by an inspection at the headquarters. Promoted by the undersecretary to the presidency of the Council Mario Turco, present, among others, the prefect Demetrio Martino, the president of the Puglia Region Michele Emiliano, the mayor of Taranto Rinaldo Melucci, the president of the Chamber of Commerce Luigi Sportelli, the general director of Asl Stefano Rossi (by videoconference), the president of the School of Medicine, Loreto Gesualdo, the rectors of the University of Bari, Stefano Bronzini, and of the Polytechnic, Francesco Cupertino, representatives of the Ionian and Asset-Puglia Department – the meeting is served above all to kick off the autonomy project of the Ionian university. In five years (there was talk in the past of a first three-year trial), it is a question of giving life to the fourth university in the region. This will require synergy and the will of the other universities of Bari, Lecce and Foggia. In the meantime, a technical table must be set up under the direction of the government to identify the path, undersecretary Mario Turco indicated. It will include the rectors Bronzini and Cupertino, the director of the Pagan Ionian Department and the president of the School of Medicine, Gesualdo. The table will have the task of elaborating the scientific plan and identifying the feasibility plan for the first three years.

There are 60 students who this year will be able to be admitted to the degree course that will start in the next few days (on track the hypothesis of an expansion of the numbers from next year). At the moment, with the first scrolling of the national rankings, there are 15 students already enrolled. From tomorrow, with the second shift, the numbers will grow. Unlike their colleagues who will attend in Bari – says the president of the School of Medicine, Gesualdo -, the students here in Taranto should be able to attend everyone in the presence. Of course, it will depend on how the epidemic curve will go, but at the moment the greater capacity of the classrooms and the fact that it is not a structure inside the Polyclinic, would suggest a path in presence for all students in a location which, moreover, , will be immediately set up with state-of-the-art medical equipment. How much will be enough – these are the intentions with which the course was born in Taranto – to make the Ionian headquarters an avant-garde model.
