Freiburg (dpa) – The pharmaceutical company Pfizer will be able to produce larger quantities much faster at its location in Freiburg in the future. The company announced this on Tuesday at the opening of a new facility. In the state-of-the-art factory, the drugs are also to be manufactured in a more resource-efficient manner. For this purpose, the existing plant was expanded and expanded over a period of three years at a cost of around 300 million euros. According to Pfizer, it is one of the world’s most modern production facilities in the pharmaceutical industry.

Economics Minister Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut said that the plant takes up sustainability aspects in an exemplary manner. “Taking into account resource efficiency and energy management, a highly automated and at the same time sustainable production process from powder to tablet is made possible here.”

According to Pfizer, up to seven billion additional tablets and capsules will be manufactured on around 13,500 square meters – an increase of 140 percent to up to twelve billion tablets and capsules per year. The Freiburg plant obtains 90 percent of its energy from sustainable sources such as geothermal or solar thermal energy.

Up to 200 new jobs are to be created by the end of the year. Around 1,800 people currently work at Pfizer in Freiburg.
