The Medicine department reopened, the emergency room is finally free
San Martino for the moment will not host sick people infected with the coronavirus

Sick in the ER until this morning

The Internal Medicine department of the San Martino di Oristano hospital was reopened this afternoon, after having been closed for a few days and after having hosted only covid patients since 5 December, following the spread of infections among hospitalized and staff.

This morning the sanitation took place and in the early afternoon the transfer of 14 of the 20 patients housed in the emergency room began, while the remaining 6 will be taken care of by the Mastino di Bosa hospital. This will allow not only a more appropriate assistance to the patients, several of whom were on stretchers in the corridors, but also to free the structure intended for the treatment of emergency-urgency, which in these days has continued to work at full capacity, welcoming people coming from various parts of Sardinia, albeit in a situation of absolute emergency.

Following the finding of various positivity, the Medical Operating Unit had had to temporarily limit hospitalizations to Covid patients only, to ensure the safety of those who do not have Covid, sent to other hospitals. Progressively, the positive subjects present in the ward have been discharged or transferred, in order to make Medicine usable again for ordinary activity, which will be conditioned, however, by the absence of part of the staff still at home following the infections.

Sergio Pili

The director of the hospital Sergio Pili explains “In Medicine at the moment 20 beds will be made available in a single ward of the ward. 10 dedicated to women and 10 to men. On the other hand, next January 7th, a check on the availability of staff will be carried out to evaluate the increase in beds ”. In fact, at the moment there are only five doctors and few nurses still in force, after the wave of infections that has kept half of the staff in quarantine.

As foreseen by the new reorganization plan, cases with proven positive Sars-CoV-2 virus will no longer be taken care of by the San Martino hospital, which will thus become Covid free, but by the hospital of Ghilarza and by the other hospitals of the Island.
