Because of the heat, vulnerable groups such as the elderly and the chronically ill are at extra risk. They are more likely to suffer from dehydration and overheating. Certain medicines also increase the risk of this. Pharmacists can help patients with advice on medication use and heat.
Certain medicines affect the temperature regulation of the body. This applies, for example, to diuretics, laxatives, medicines for cardiovascular disease, antipsychotics and antidepressants. The risk is further increased in people taking a combination of these medicines.
The KNMP advises pharmacists to discuss this subject with the pharmacy team and to pay attention to it in conversations with patients.
Apotheek.nl contains a page about medication use during heat. The content on this page prepares the entire pharmacy team well for any substantive questions from the patient on this subject.

Advice that pharmacists and their teams can give to the patient in case of heat:
- Drink at least two liters of fluid per day: regularly small amounts, one cup or one glass at a time. Keep the drink handy. Take tap or bottled water, milk, buttermilk, tea or coffee without sugar, fruit juice or sugar-free (soft) drinks.
- Eat healthy and regularly when it is hot. Fruit and vegetables contain a lot of water, vitamins and salts.
- Avoid the heat and strenuous exercise. Only go outside in the morning when it is still reasonably cool, wear airy clothing and use a sunscreen with a high protection factor outside.
