Constantly receiving hard slaps in the face is bad for your health. To quote Louis de Funès: “No! Yes! Ohh!”

What has long been obvious to common sense has now been scientifically proven: the trend sport of slap fighting is bad for your health – especially your brain.

A study by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine – the first medical study on this topic – shows that around half of all strikes result in possible brain damage, or more precisely, symptomatic signs of a concussion. Overall, 80 percent of all participants are said to show signs of a concussion at the end of their fights.

Was ist Slap-Fighting?

The German translation “face-slapping competition” almost seems a little trivializing. In slap fighting, two opponents face each other and take turns hitting each other in the face with their open palms – as hard as they can. After receiving a blow, you have 30 seconds to recover and then hit again. The winners are decided by points.

Doctors have long warned of the harmful health effects of the sport, which is particularly popular on social media. To find out how great the risk of brain damage is, the authors of the study watched videos of such slapping competitions and analyzed a total of 333 different blows. Visible signs of concussions ranged from reduced attention to a complete loss of the ability to react.

More background information on slap fighting:

This is primarily a concern for the future health of the participants. “Clinically, a concussion can manifest itself in different ways, but each can lead to short- or long-term impairments and socioeconomic problems,” explains neurosurgeon Nitin Agarwal, author of the study. As a physician with a passion for martial arts, he remains concerned about the frequency of obvious signs of concussion in slap fighters.

His team is now working on measuring the physical impact of an average punch in such competitions. The results will help to better inform participants, organizers and doctors at such events in the future and ensure improved safety regulations.

It would be better for your own health to simply avoid such competitions.

He is simply an incredible goal machine. In the 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Sunday, Erling Haaland scored his 100th goal for Manchester City. How impressive is that? He scored these 100 goals in just 105 appearances.

Erling Haaland has played two seasons in the Premier League so far. The Norwegian has been top scorer twice. And the third title seems to be a formality: In the first five games of the current season, Haaland has already scored ten goals.
