Medical student suddenly sees friend’s body in anatomy lesson | Abroad

Enya Egbe, now 26, remembers the moment, seven years ago, as if it were yesterday. He and his fellow students at the University of Calabar crowded around some of the bodies. This allows them to experiment for their medical studies.

A few minutes later, Enya runs out of the classroom crying and screaming.

The body that should be worked on is that of Divine, with whom Enya had been friends for seven years. “We went out together,” says Enya. “There were two bullet holes on the right side of his chest.”

Family: we don’t know anything

Enya contacts Divine’s family. They turned out to be desperately looking for their son and had already knocked on the door of several police stations. He was arrested after a night out. More was not known.

The family eventually recovered the body.

Criminal?

The incident is symptomatic of the system, the BBC correspondent wrote. Registration of deaths falls short. Officially, 90 percent of the bodies of unknown origin are ‘criminal shot’, but often they are people who have been shot by the security forces.

Anatomy professors have united and hope for stricter laws around the use of bodies.
