A 45-year-old man from Lehrte changed his job several times between 2008 and 2017. During his employment, according to consistent media reports in various high-paid management positions, he was repeatedly unable to work. According to a report in the Bild newspaper, he gave psychological problems after various assaults or traffic accidents as the reason for this. Over the above-mentioned period of nine years, the impressive total amount of 898,700 euros in daily sickness benefit from his insurance was collected. At the same time, however, the supposedly unfit for work studied medicine and successfully completed his studies.
That apparently made his insurance prick up his ears: They sued for a reimbursement of the benefits paid.
This is how the LG Hildesheim judged
The Hildesheim Regional Court did not follow the defense counsel’s argument that the medical studies had a therapeutic effect and helped the accused to deal with trauma. According to media reports, the civil chamber has now decided that the successful degree refutes a complete inability to work. The man had deliberately deceived his insurance. A court spokesman is quoted as saying that since he had neither appeared in court nor with a medical officer, the chamber was not able to convince itself otherwise.
In addition to the amount of almost 900,000 euros, the convicted person also has to pay the interest of almost 200,000 euros. He is also facing criminal proceedings for fraud. The verdict is not yet legally binding
