- Dimitar Marinov, 31, likely suffered a massive pulmonary embolism, hospital says, awaiting autopsy results
- An internal investigation has begun at MOBAL “Stefan Cherkezov”
The death of a young man, who left a 5-year-old orphan, gathered relatives and friends in front of the hospital in Veliko Tarnovo on Friday, who are demanding answers from doctors about what led to the tragedy.
Dimitar Marinov, 31 years old he died on the afternoon of December 27 in the intensive care unit, and before that he was in the infectious disease unit ward with viral pneumonia of unknown origin. He was discharged from there with improvements, explained medical director Dr. Galina Gareva. However, Dimitar’s family and friends doubt whether he was the victim of neglect or inadequate medical treatment.
“On December 12, he entered the infectious disease ward, was treated. On the fifth day, he asked the doctor to go home for one night to take a shower and come back the next day for injections. He felt ill, he started vomiting, dizzy, tic. When he returned to the ward, he continued to vomit, but they did not pay attention to these symptoms and on the 7-8th day he was discharged. At night it got worse, Started hallucinating I called 911, was hospitalized again, also had seizures and had to be admitted to intensive care. He’s never had a disease – straight, healthy, energetic, ”said his wife Silvia Tsoneva. He still can’t figure out what happened.
Dimitar worked in a tire shop, they have a son, but instead of preparing for the new year, the family organizes a funeral. This was stated by Petyo Radev, father of the deceased the family insisted that a national adviser be called, but doctors assured they had the resources to cope despite the poor prognosis.
The head of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care (OAIL), Dr Sibila Marinova, who was absent from work over the Christmas period, said the matter was raised with her on December 27 and the necessary steps were immediately taken to secure a specialist external. On the same day, Professor Galya Gancheva, an infectious disease specialist from Pleven, was called, but the patient died.
“Prof. Gancheva wrote that the prognosis is extremely bad, but the treatment is according to the algorithms. Confirm that it’s a viral encephalitis and said that she has no objection to us,” Dr. Sibila Marinova told “24 Chasa”.
“The patient was treated according to all the rules of medicine in these cases. We don’t have the autopsy results yet, we are working with the working diagnosis for the immediate cause of death – massive pulmonary thromboembolism,” said Dr. Galina Gareva.
“We believe this is a case of viral encephalitis of unclear etiology, previous undiagnosed covid infection. At the time of admission to the OAIL, the patient’s condition had an extremely poor prognosis, regardless of the treatment carried out, which is in agreement with current therapeutic algorithms,” he explains.
An internal inspection has also begun at MOBAL “Dr. Stefan Cherkezov”. The documentation was confiscated from the two wards where the patient was being treated. The explanations of the doctors are removed.
