Medical Malpractice in New Zealand: Surgical Instrument Left in Patient’s Stomach for 18 Months

In New Zealand, doctors accidentally left a rather large surgical instrument – the wound tensioner “Alexis” – in the stomach of a 20-year-old woman during a caesarean section. It was accidentally discovered 18 months later during a CT scan, reports “unian.net”.

Referring to the publication “Futurism”, “unian.net” reports that the tensioner was discovered one and a half years after the caesarean section, when the woman came for a CT scan of the abdominal cavity. Before that, she had gone to the doctor several times, complaining of stomach pain.

The surgical instrument was found in the same hospital where she had her first surgery. It is assumed that the doctors “did not notice” the tool due to the increased body weight of the mother.

“Alexis” wound retractor is a medical device used during surgery to protect the wound and provide good visibility at the surgical site. It is made of flexible material.
