Medical care capacity in Suriname under considerable pressure

'Suriname only has 30 Intensive Care spots, so stay home!'

In view of the sharp increase in the number of Covid-19 positive cases in Suriname, it can be assumed that the capacity of medical care has come under considerable pressure. More tests are being carried out, the results of which will soon be shared with society. Now that there is community spreading, the Surinamese society is again asked to stick to the official channels when it comes to news about the Covid-19 approach in Suriname.

In Suriname, the official covid-19 counter has continued to rise in recent days. There is currently an explosive growth in the number of corona infections. On Sunday the counter stood at 5 pm on 5 active cases and a total of 15 positively tested corona cases. 24 hours later on Monday around 7 p.m. the counter jumped to 34 active cases and 44 tested positive.

Cases 12 to 16 are accommodated in the St. Vincentius Hospital. Eight people who tested positive later were admitted to Wanica Hospital. Where the others are included is still unclear. “In addition to capacity, human resources and consumables are also under pressure,” said Public Health Director Cleopatra Jessurun at the last press conference of the National Covid-19 Management Team.

Specially for Covid-19 patients, 45 treatment devices have been prepared with the possibility of expanding to 69. However, the biggest problem besides the consumables is human resources. The director is very grateful for any donation to medical care. Public health is now in a phase where rapid tests are being evaluated and validated. With the confirmed cases of local contamination, the Covid status in Suriname has turned red, which means that there is local contamination.
