Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – MediaTek announced that it has successfully developed its first 3nm chipset. The chip will soon be released as part of the Dimensity series in the second half of next year.
Reportedly the new chip will be launched on all devices ranging from smartphones, tablets, smart cars and a number of other devices.
This latest chipset uses TSMC’s 3nm processing technology. The company did not explain in detail about the chipset, but only said that its processing was much more profitable than the 5nm N5, quoted from GSM Arena, Tuesday (12/9/2023).
GSM Arena citing data, the 3nm chipset provides 18% faster using the same power consumption. Apart from that, there is also a power reduction of 32% at the same speed. The 3nm chip also provides an increase in logic density of 60%.
Apple previously reportedly bought the same chip for the iPhone A17 Bionic and M3 chips for Macs. Report Ars Technica last August said the technology giant made large purchases in order to reduce company costs.
Apple stands to gain with such large purchases, as TSMC will cover the costs on defective processors.
In the report The Information at that point, TSMC’s 3nm technology will be exclusive to Apple for about a year. This was done before capacity allowed for other companies to use it.
The agreement is said to have been present since Apple used TSMC in 2014. Since recently it has been known that all Apple chips have been produced by TSMC, after previously also using processors from Samsung.
Apple is known to be TSMC’s biggest customer. The Informations reported 32% of TSMC’s US$72 billion in revenue last year came from the iPhone maker.
