MediaMarkt will be showing products from external retailers on its own site. That says a top man of the Dutch branch of the retailer in an interview. With this, the company wants to show more offers via the site.
MediaMarkt is already doing something like this in some other countries and in Germany running a beta. The company will also do this in the Netherlands, says Shariar Khalili of MediaMarkt Benelux to Twinkle. The reason for this is that MediaMarkt can then show more products on the site, without the company having to have stock itself. Retailers can therefore offer their products via a large platform.
Khalili cites expensive televisions as an example. TV manufacturers can sell models of 30,000 euros via the MediaMarkt site, while the company does not have it itself and has chosen not to offer it. It is unknown when MediaMarkt will do this.
The marketplace model is well known in the e-commerce world. Amazon has been doing this for much longer, now also in the Netherlands. Bol.com also has such a model with external sellers that can be found via the site. A well-known foreign example is AliExpress, which works with all kinds of small retailers.
