Media: The whole of Spain becomes a corona risk area | Currently Europe | DW

According to a report, the federal government wants to classify all of Spain as a corona risk area. As the Funke media group reports, citing government circles, Cyprus is also to be declared a high incidence area. In Ireland, the Midlands and Midwest regions would be newly designated as risk areas. The Robert Koch Institute publishes the new Corona classifications for abroad every Friday.

In Spain, the number of infections had recently risen dramatically. So far, however, only six of the 17 regions – including the holiday areas of Catalonia and Andalusia – as well as the exclave of Ceuta in North Africa are considered risk areas. The Balearic Islands with the popular holiday island Mallorca and the Canary Islands are not yet included.

No consequences for air travelers

Countries and regions with more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days are designated as risk areas. It is the lowest of three risk groups. Such a classification does not have any practical consequences for holidaymakers if they are traveling by plane: Then they have to present a negative test result or proof of vaccination or recovery before departure anyway. Only those returning to travel who do not meet these conditions have to be quarantined in Germany.

The situation is different in areas of high incidence – the medium risk level. Anyone who comes back from such a region and is not fully vaccinated or recovered can only end the ten-day quarantine prematurely after five days with a negative test.

Portuguese hotels raise barriers

Evidence of vaccination, recovery or a negative corona test is also even more important for Portugal vacationers: This is the only way they will be allowed to stay in hotels in the future. On Friday evenings and on weekends, the evidence is also required for restaurant visits in 60 inner city districts – including Lisbon and Porto. In the country, the number of infections had recently risen steadily again.

The French government advises against traveling to Spain or Portugal because of the rapid spread of the Delta virus variant. Those who have not yet booked their vacation should avoid both EU countries, said the State Secretary for European Affairs, Clément Beaune, of the television channel France 2. “That is a recommendation that I insist on.” There is no travel ban for the time being.
