Exhibition opening in Meiringen

On Saturday, March 20, 2021, the traveling exhibition “Archeology makes history – Finds from the Canton of Bern” of the Archaeological Service of the Canton of Bern will open its doors in Meiringen. Until April 10, 2021, the great diversity of Bern archeology can be discovered in two containers on Casinoplatz. Further information and the detailed opening times of the exhibition can be found on the website www.be.ch/archaeologie.

In the exhibition in Meiringen, visitors can get to know selected finds from all regions of the canton from Wednesday to Saturday. From the eastern Bernese Oberland, for example, witnesses of the mining for lead and silver, namely slag from the mining facilities of Trachsellauenen in the rear Lauterbrunnen valley. A second find from the region comes from the American Dakota, which had to make an emergency landing on the Gauli Glacier in 1946. This aircraft wreck, which sank in the glacier, has been melting out of the ice for several years and various parts of the wreck have been salvaged by the Swiss army. As material remains of this episode in the post-war period, the finds are now an important part of recent regional history.

The traveling exhibition is part of the anniversary program that the Archaeological Service created on the occasion of his 50th birthday in 2020. The three exhibition locations Meiringen, Zweisimmen and Münsingen could not be used in the past year due to corona. Exactly one year later than originally planned, this should now be made up for. An inauguration vernissage will not be held.
