Police chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo issued a telegram letter related to the coverage medium mass within the Police. The telegram is addressed to the Kapolda and Head of Public Relations of the ranks dated April 5, 2021.
In his points, the National Police Chief asked the media not to broadcast police actions that displayed arrogance and violence. This is contained in the first point of the telegram.
“The media are prohibited from broadcasting police efforts / actions that display arrogance and violence. Then they are advised to broadcast police activities that are assertive but humanist,” Listyo wrote in the telegram and was quoted as saying on Tuesday (6/4).
In addition, the National Police Chief also requested that the recording of the police interrogation process in investigating the suspect not be made available. This includes, he said, not showing details of the reconstruction carried out by the police.
Then, several other points relate to the journalistic code of ethics. For example, such as not showing reenactments of rape or sexual crimes. Then, disguise the facial images and identities of victims and families of sexual crimes, as well as the perpetrators.
Then, do not display explicitly and in detail about the suicide scene and the identity of the perpetrator. Including, not showing scenes of brawls or fights in detail and repeatedly.
Still referring to the telegram, the National Police Chief requested that the arrest of the criminals not include the media. That activity, too, may not be broadcast live.
“The documentation is carried out by competent police personnel,” added Listyo.
Finally, Listyo said that the procedures for making and activating explosives must not be presented in a detailed and explicit manner.
The telegram with the number ST / 750 / IV / HUM.3.4.5. / 2021 was signed by the Head of the Public Relations Division of the Police, Inspector General Argo Yuwono on behalf of the National Police Chief. Telegram acts as a direction (Jukrah) to be implemented by the police.
Separately, the Head of the Police Public Information Bureau (Karopenmas), Brigadier General Rusdi Hartono said that the telegram issuance was done to improve the performance of the Police. However, he did not elaborate on the reasons for the issuance of the telegram letter.
“The consideration is that the regional police’s performance is getting better,” said Rusdi when confirmed.
