Media: Pfizer to Tell US Authorities about Third Dose of Its Vaccine

The American company Pfizer, which has developed the Comirnaty coronavirus vaccine together with its German partner BioNTech, intends to inform the US authorities in the near future about the need to use the third (booster) dose of the drug, writes The Washington Post.

It is noted that the briefing may take place as early as Monday, July 12. It is expected that the meeting will be attended by the head of the US National Institutes of Health Francis Collins, the director of the US National Institute of Allergic and Infectious Diseases Anthony Fauci, the head of the US Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Rochelle Walensky, and Acting Janet Woodcock, Director of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Earlier, Pfizer and BioNTech announced their intention to soon provide the FDA and the European Medicines Agency (EMA) with data on trials of the use of a booster dose of the drug.

“Initial study results show that a booster dose administered six months after the second dose has a sustained tolerance profile, eliciting high antibody titers that are 5-10 times higher than after two initial injections,” the companies explained.

The companies’ press releases were followed by a statement from the FDA and CDC, which said they did not believe vaccinated Americans now needed a third dose of the drug. At the same time, they noted that they will be ready for booster doses if science shows that it is necessary.
