Media Markt and Saturn: The first branches have to close

The corona crisis is hitting the retail sector hard. Media Markt and Saturn also felt the effects. As early as spring 2021 it became known that the operator of the retail chains, MediaMarktSaturn, wants to close 13 of the 419 stores in Germany by autumn 2022. The situation is apparently even more explosive. As the
Food newspaper
reports, the group is planning further closings – even for the current financial year. Only in individual cases should the plans overlap with the planned dismantling.-

Saturn before the end?

Saturn is particularly affected. Shops in Gelsenkirchen, Essen, Fürth and Göttingen should close their doors by September 30, 2021. It is not yet clear which other stores will have to close in the 21/22 financial year. In the industry, however, according to Lebensmittel Zeitung, it is assumed that many stores of the Saturn brand will be hit again. But that also depends on the respective landlord. Saturn stores in particular can be found in city locations with high rents.

MediaMarktSaturn demands rent reduction

MediaMarktSaturn wants to save a lot in the future. According to Lebensmittel Zeitung, the company is currently trying to negotiate better rental conditions at 40 to 60 locations. There is talk of a rent reduction of up to 50 percent. In addition, the group is pushing for smaller sales areas. This is intended to reduce the rent burden, in line with MediaMarktSaturn’s goal: in future, every store should be operated profitably in the long term.
